JULY WTA NEWS LETTER

ABOUT THE RICHFIELD MEET:

Thanks to Mark Jones who sent in the following Richfield report:
Richfield is one of the most unique locations we ride at. The meet is held just across the interstate from town. With great rocks and challenging hillsides and canyons, this area is a trials mecca. Great camping right in the pits and it seems very remote. Yet stores, restaurants and hotels are just a few blocks away.

The trials gods once again smiled on us as our very unpredictable Utah weather stormed around us all weekend but we only endured a few short sprinkles. George Carey set eight great sections for Saturday with a wide variety of terrain. Sections one and two ran up a steep hillside, three through six were in a canyon and seven and eight were below the water tower.

Twenty four riders broke away from summer commitments to ride on Saturday. As usual, most of the classes were very competitive and thanks to George there were not any low scores. Steve Davis worked very hard for all of his 62 points!

Twelve of us stayed for Sunday. The lower classes modified George's sections for Sunday while the upper classes set six new sections in the canyon. The Champs made it hard on themselves as the winning score of 56 for 18 sections is an average of over 3 points per section. Troy Steineckert edged Rick Johnson by a single point for the Champ class win by taking a two on the last section instead of the customary three or five.

Salena Kentuly choose Sunday for her first trials. After a rough start she smoothed out and even recorded a few cleans by the end of the day. Her boyfriend Rob Norbutt, our ace photographer, must have sensed George Carey's absence and decided to try his own Evel Knievel impression. Attempting the high line on section two, Rob and the Montesa shot skyward, executed a few pirouettes and then stuck the landing halfway back down the hill. Too bad Rob couldn't take photos of himself. 14 year old Caleb Miller made the trek from Grand Junction with his family and rode great both days in the Sportsman class.

Richfield was another great WTA meet. Coming up are the best of the best. Powder Mountain in July is our one opportunity of the year to ride in our beautiful Utah mountains. And the Loa two day meet in August offers some of the best trials rocks in the world. So feet up, let's ride.

Some additional information/ requirements follow.

SPARK ARRESTORS
Spark arrestors are REQUIRED by the landowner, and will be
checked. If you don't have a spark arrestor, please check with
one of our Utah trials businesses and get one. This should be
enough warning. Don't wait until the last minute. Also, spark
arrestors are REQUIRED on all BLM and Forest Service lands.
And the upcoming Loa 2-day and Desert Mountain WTA meets are
on BLM lands. So get a spark arrestor.

ATV & UTV ACCESS
Some spectators / family / friends may want to take an ATV or
UTV to the event site, which is about 4.5 miles from the gate
below the main parking lot. For those who do, only use your
ATV or UTV on the road to get from the main parking lot to
the event site and back. We don't have permission for
arbitrary riding around the area or exploring.

CLEANUP
Aside from the usual cleanup of sections and loop, we'll also
pickup any trash we see along the access road and around the
parking lot and lodges. This will help us stay on good terms
with the landowners, and be a feather in our caps when we ask
for future events. So please plan on taking some extra time
for trash pickup.

PACK IN WHAT YOU NEED
The event site is about 4.5 miles from the parking lot. Carry
your lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, bug repellant, spare
fuel, tools, spares, and anything else you may need in a
backpack.

MINIMIZE IMPACT
To minimize impact stay on access roads to & from the event
site, stay on the loop trail and sections during the event.
Keeping our impact low at this event will help us when we
ask for future events.
