MARCH WTA NEWS
LETTER
ABOUT THE MOAB MEET:
On arrival, we discovered that
the marshals who were supposed to set the meet bummed out on us, and it appeared
that Chris knew that a lot of out of state riders would be coming to the
Moab meet, so our trusty Prez, Chris Trease, took things in hand and got Dave and Sam Davenport to help him set the
thing! Now, Chris already set the St George meet which
is about enough to ask of anyone, but he stepped up to the bar and bailed
us out once again at Moab. I should say that he bailed TEN of us out...cause
that's how many WTA members showed up to the Moab meet. TEN!
Fortunately there were about twenty-five Colorado and Arizona riders who
showed up to enjoy those terrific sections that Chris set and a terrific
time was had by everyone who mad the trek to Moab.
In typical Moab fashion, there
was lots of red rock, red sand and a beautiful sunny Moab shirt sleeve day.
The only down side was that it took at least an hour of driving a gnarly
dirt road up to the top of the world, then back down to get to the Base Camp.
There were a few folks who took cars down in there, something that I would
not advise anyone to do...ever, but for the most part a truck or a high clearance
vehicle was needed to get down in there, and getting down in was just half
the chore. John Borg chose to leave his van down at the bottom and
rode his Montesa a good five miles to the meet. But that iron man Damon
Nielsen pulled his giagantic enclosed trailer up to the top and then down in there. That
boy needs to have his head examined cause there were hair pin turns that
I had had to make like three point turns in my truck to make! After
the meet we got to drive back up that thing to get out of there! This
would not be a road to drive in the dark and I would NEVER EVER want to tackle
it when it was wet. EVER! But it was a neat place to ride, and
the scenery was spectacular down next the Colorado River.
Chris set nine sections for each
class. Steve and I got there late (we didn't know it would take over
and our to get down in there from Moab) and the meet had already been going
for fifteen minutes or better before we arrived. The only Senior Intermediate
Riders there were John Borg and George Carey who needed someone to beat
up on, so they waited while we hastily unloaded then Steve and I road with
them. Turned out John Weiss was there too, but he was off riding with
the Colorado contigency so we didn't know he was there for Steve to ride
with till after the meet. But for crying out loud folks...ten WTA members?
And the marshals bummed out? Chris has more stick to it than I do,
cause I would have canceled it. Anyway, thanks to Chris who saved
the day and the reputation of the WTA. We owe him guys.
As of the Moab meet, no one had
stepped up to set the Kanab meet, but at the last minute, Mooseman's said
they would step up to the plate and set Kanab, so Chris tells me the Kanab
meet is still on.
